Infertility
is the inability of a couple to become pregnant even after recurrent
attempts. Infertility treatment is given to a couple who are found to
be infertile and wish to become parents. Although people have a
preconceived notion that only women are responsible for infertility, men are
equally responsible as it has been found in various cases that the reason a
couple couldn’t conceive was male factor infertility.
Male factor
infertility contributes to a third of infertility cases. There are various
causes of infertility in men such as low sperm count, abnormally shaped sperm,
or other blockages that disrupt the rapid movement of the sperm. Other causes
of male infertility are certain health issues, injury, disability, contagious
diseases, or lifestyle factors that prevent the couple from becoming pregnant.
The
inability to conceive can be stressful and devastating, but there are
several infertility treatments available at Dynamic Fertility & IVF Centre to
diagnose and treat the cause of male factor infertility. We have highly
qualified fertility experts who apply all their skills
and expertise to eradicate the cause of infertility in men
and provide appropriate treatment.
We ensure to provide you a quality fertility treatment and
enable you to experience the joy of parenthood.
Symptoms of Infertility in Men
The most
obvious signs indicating a man is infertile is their inability to conceive. However,
there may be other major problems such as genetic disorder, enlarged veins in
the scrotum blocking the sperm movement, and hormonal imbalances.
Some of the
common signs and symptoms of male factor infertility are listed below:
- Problems with ejaculation: The inability to ejaculate or small
amounts of ejaculated fluid, or decreased sex drive, are the signs
implying it’s time to visit a doctor.
- Erectile dysfunction: When
it is difficult for a man to maintain a firm erection during sexual intercourse,
which is maybe due to reduced hormonal levels, can lead to an issue in
conceiving successfully.
- Swollen testicles:
Men’s testicles are sensitive and it can be uncomfortable and painful when
they have swollen. The swelling could be caused by injury, infection,
testicular torsion, issues with veins, etc. These conditions can lead to
the cause of infertility in men.
- Low Sperm Count: If
you have low sperm count or if your sperm count is lower than 15 million
sperm per milliliter, then it’s an indication that you need to see a
fertility doctor for improving the chances of conceiving.
Causes of Male Infertility
Unhealthy
sperm or low sperm count is amongst the major causes of infertility
in men. There has been reported a significant rise in the number of
male infertility cases over the past few years and the situation continues to
worsen. There are various causes of male infertility such as hormonal
imbalances, physical issues, and behavioral problems. Additionally,
there are some common causes that have been the reason for infertility in men.
Some of the common causes of
infertility in men are:
·
Varicocele: It is a condition in which
the enlarged veins on the testicles are apparent or have become swollen.
Varicocele can be corrected through surgery and is a common problem leading to
low sperm count, bad quality sperm or low motility sperm, and also leading to
the cause of infertility in men.
·
Damaged sperm ducts: When a man has damaged
sperm ducts it is difficult for his sperms to effectively emerge out of the
penis. There are various causes for such duct obstruction such as inherited
disorders, resulting in the absence of tubes that transport the sperm from the
testicles to the penis.
·
Infection: There are specific infections that
can disrupt the process of sperm production and capable of blocking the passage
from which the sperm passes such as gonorrhea, HIV, sexually transmitted infections,
inflammation of the epididymis, etc. If you have any of these infections then
it will be hard for you to conceive and a fertility treatment may be required.
·
Tumors. Benign tumors or cancer growth can dramatically affect
the smooth functioning of the male reproductive organs. These tumors can affect
the glands that secrete hormones related to reproduction such as the pituitary
gland. In certain cases, different surgeries and radiation therapies
can prove to be beneficial in treating tumors that are the cause of male
infertility.
·
Undescended
testicles: During
prenatal development, the testicle fails to move properly into its position
down into the scrotal sac. An undescended testicle can lead to the problem with
infertility and also has the possibility of turning into cancer.

Different
Male Infertility Treatments Available at Dynamic Fertility & IVF Centre.
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)
IUI or
artificial insemination is the technique in which a woman gets
artificially inseminated using the male’s sperm. During
the IUI treatment procedure, the doctor directly injects sperm into
the uterus of the mother in order to induce pregnancy. This is the
simplest method of becoming pregnant when a couple is unable to conceive
naturally due to male factor infertility. The woman is giving medication to
induce ovulation in case the woman is not ovulating. In the course of the
treatment, healthy sperm is selected and injected into the uterus of
the mother for increasing the chances of conception.
IVF with donor sperm
IVF or
In Vitro Fertilization is a type of assisted reproductive technique in which
fertilization occurs outside the woman’s body. In IVF, fertility
medication is given to the woman so that her ovaries could produce a sufficient
amount of eggs. Once the eggs become mature, they are taken out with
the help of the egg retrieval procedure. These collected eggs are then mixed
with the sperm provided by the sperm donor. After fertilization takes place,
the formed embryo(s) are placed inside the womb of the woman. Some
tests and ultrasounds are done on the woman to find out if pregnancy
has occurred. This procedure is beneficial when the cause of infertility is in
men and he is incapable of producing good quality motile sperms.
ICSI
(Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
ICSI is an advanced type of IVF
treatment performed in case of male infertility caused due to poor motility
sperm, low sperm count, or abnormally shaped sperm. During ICSI treatment, a
sperm is injected into the cytoplasm of an egg. The doctor uses a delicate
needle to pick up a single high-motility sperm, which is then injected into the
mature egg received from the conventional IVF technique. After healthy
fertilization is achieved, the embryo is introduced inside the uterus of the
woman and pregnancy takes place.
ICSI technique is usually employed
when a couple has experienced failure with the traditional IVF cycle. This
treatment increases the chances of conception and has proven to deliver high
success rates.
PICSI
(Physiological Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)
PICSI treatment procedure is quite
similar to ICSI, the only difference is sperm is selected on the basis of its
ability to bond with hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that surrounds the
egg that prevents immotile sperms from entering into it. During the PICSI treatment,
small drops of hyaluronan substance are poured at the base of a petri dish; the
sperms obtained from semen collection procedure are kept in this petri dish
until fused with the hyaluronan substance.
The sperm that bonds well with
hyaluronan is selected for the purpose of injecting it to the egg. Once
successful fertilization is achieved, the resulted embryo is placed inside the
womb of the mother and pregnancy occurs naturally.
IMSI (Intracytoplasmic
Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection)
IMSI is an amplified version of ICSI
in which sperms are examined under a microscope with magnification up to 6000x
that enables the doctor to have a more clear view of the sperm cells in order
to detect the smallest abnormalities in the sperm, which are leading to the
cause of infertility in men. With the help of IMSI technique, the doctor
selects the best quality sperm and injects it into the egg, thus significantly
improving the chances of conception.
This advanced method is recommended
to patients who have had failures with IVF or ICSI treatment. ICSI technique
makes it easier for the doctor to assess the morphology of the sperm and keep
low-quality immotile sperms from getting into the egg.
